Diamond trade across Mumbai shuts down

Post Date: 16 Jul 2011    Viewed: 954

MUMBAI: Diamond brokers and merchants across the city refused to conduct business on Friday to protest the government's failure to protect them from the terror attack at Opera House on July 13. It wasn't just Panchratna building in Opera House that wore a deserted look as nearly 2,000 diamond traders and brokers who operate in the area paid their respects to the families of the victims. Trading hubs at Pydhonie and Malad, and even the smaller units at Borivli, Dahisar and Bandra (E) remained closed. Experts have estimated that the industry sustained a loss of Rs 175 crore on Friday.

The Mumbai Diamond Merchants' Association will be holding a condolence meeting today, where they will announce financial help for families of the victims and the injured members.

Sanjay Shah, executive committee member of the Mumbai Diamond Merchants' Association said: "We are scared to conduct business at Panchratna. In the July 13 attack, the bomb exploded outside the building. The next attack could be in the building premises. Our members are scared to walk on the road outside the building or go to any restaurant in the vicinity." Shah and other association members reiterated the need for a strong police presence in the area.

The association has drafted a memorandum on the question of security, which will be submitted to police commissioner Arup Patnaik this weekend. "We will be sending a delegation to discuss our concerns with Arup Patnaik. The police chief will have to assure us that our members and their staff will not be targeted in the future," he said.

Around 50,000 people, employed in the diamond industry, commute daily from Charni Road station to the Opera House area-which houses the nearly 4,000 offices in the 25-storey Panchratna, the 16-storey Prasad Chambers and nine other buildings in the vicinity. "We are peace-loving people, but our members are agitated after the blasts. We are not anti-government, but it is high time the state protects us from terrorists," said Jayesh Labdhi, another committee member.

Hardik Hundiya, who edits a diamond trade magazine, said that many brokers are being urged to operate out of Gujarat.
