Surface treatment effect on properties of CBN abrasive grains

Abstract The present article intended to cover a main research on the surface treatment of CBN abrasive grains. The surface treating methods applied to CBN abrasive grains included acid treatment and alkali treatment in our experiment. The surface treatment effect on properties of CBN abrasive grains was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), differential scanning calorimetry- thermogravimetry (DSC-TG) and various strength tester techniques. The results indicated that acid treatment was beneficial to the single particle compressive strength, impact toughness and heat resistance of CBN grains. On the contrary, alkali treatment was harmful to the properties of CBN grains.
